The Hydraulic Tirfor winch, also known as a Supertirfor, is a portable motorized hoist and puller that uses a unique "walking" grip mechanism on a wire rope to generate immense pulling or lifting forces over unlimited distances. Unlike a standard drum winch that stores rope, the Hydraulic Tirfor uses a set of hydraulically actuated jaws and pistons that alternately clamp onto a static wire rope and move it through the machine, allowing it to lift or pull loads over any length of rope without needing to respool. This design makes the Hydraulic Tirfor indispensable for heavy rescue, industrial rigging, and utility work, especially where electricity is unavailable and portability is critical. The hydraulic power pack, which can be electric or petrol-driven, supplies the pressure to the Tirfor head. A distinct operational advantage is the ability to use a single hydraulic power pack to simultaneously power 1, 2, or even 4 Tirfor units, all pulling or lifting the same massive load in perfect synchronization, a capability perfect for large-scale load skidding or pulling a grounding cable up a steep incline. The cable pulling force can be directed horizontally to slide heavy machinery, vertically to lift a beam into place, or at an angle for complex positioning. As the wire rope length is unlimited depending on how much is available, these winches are used to pull heavy pipe sections across 200 meters of a trenchless construction site.
